Can someone tell me three organizations that are involved in preservation of endangered species in captivity?

I need 1 botanical garden, 1 zoo, and 1 aquarium that are involved with the preservation of endanged species in captivity. Please help me with this issue. I don't know much about this subject and I have a term paper due in a week for this information. Thank you to all that help me.

Can someone tell me three organizations that are involved in preservation of endangered species in captivity?
Try www.aza.org that is the american zoo and aquarium website. pretty much every zoo and aquarium that is a member is involved in the preservation of endangered species in captivity, you might also look up SSP (species survival plan) while you're there. For the plants look up the smithsonian instution or the national botanical garden in washington dc
Reply:Try this link...it is for the San Diego Zoo's endangered species program.

What are good activities to do with a 3 month old?/ reading ect?

I may sound like all "new moms" but I really want to be the best mom I can be. I want to do so many thing with my little one but I'm afraid that she maybe to young. I read to her now but i'm wondering what I can do to make us closer and to be sure she is "average or above average" regarding development. Is that dumb? I just want to make sure she's up to date wtih all her developmental goals, she's not overweight and is constantly stimulated. My dad use to read to me ALOT when I was young and I've always loved to read as I got older. I hope to do the same with her. I just dont want to miss or forget anything.

I'm planning to take her to the botanical garden because, she like to look at the trees when we're outside..lol I know I probably sound like a crazy new mom but, I just dont want to make mistakes or regret not doing something. I want us to be close and education is vital. Any suggestions on toys, entertainment or activities that might be good for us?

What are good activities to do with a 3 month old?/ reading ect?
it's not too early at all.

try singing, reading, or just talking in general. she will watch the movements of your mouth and thus learn how to form sounds. try not to use baby words or "goo goo ga ga" sounds.

also, put her on her tummy and give her a few toys within a short reach. this will help her strenghthen her neck and arm muscles.
Reply:Keep reading, talking, singing, going for walks, rolling around with her on the floor. Forget about prepackaged "educational" toys -- especially anything that beeps, talks, or purports to teach the alphabet -- and let her play with basic stuff as she gets older (blocks, dolls, balls, cars).

It sounds like your daughter is off to a great start. "Constantly stimulated" isn't necessarily a good thing. Stimulated, definitely -- but it sounds like you're very much already doing that. Babies and older kids also need some downtime to think about the world, stare at the ceiling fan, practice wiggling their toes, or whatever. You give them a gift by giving them a balance of your loving attention and some time for them to set their own pace.
Reply:Just want to be careful not to over stimulate....If you are constantly entertaining her she will grow to have to be entertained all of the time.......she needs quiet periods and periods where she can entertain herself....

There's nothing nutty about wanting the best for your child, as long as you know where to draw the line, and spending every waking moment finding new things to do for her is a sure sign of an early burnout.......she's only 3 months old..slow it down, reading to her is nice but she don't know what your doing she only hears your voice, try singing to her or listening to soft music......botanical gardens? Try hanging a few mobiles on your porch for her to look at or wind chimes, children are easily entertained you don't have to go any farther than your own home....don't make it complicating for yourself.... Good Luck
Reply:while she is young its never too early to teach her reading is fun- I used to read a nursery rhyme book but made it lots of fun acting out certain parts and even as a baby she started responding.I read to my daughter every night(and some days) and she was reading before anyone else in her kindergarten class. The main thing to remember is not to over stimulate your baby-I've seen huge parties thrown for 1 year olds who really have no idea whats going on and are just scared because too much is going on
Reply:tickle her and read to her and snuggle up. baby's like that. and no she's not too young for anything/
Reply:The best thing to do with your 3 month old is just ENJOY HER. At this age just talking to her is great, reading to her is even better. AND if you want her to be bilingual then this is a great time to start teaching her (my friend did this and I was totally amazed!). Stay away from just cuddling in front of the TV with her. Take her for walks and constantly tell her what you see going on around you both. Seems silly but even a small conversation of "Mommy and baby are in line waiting to take our groceries home, and doesn't that book on the shelf look pretty" keeps a little mind working. Its great that you want to be the best you can be for your child and give her everything, just remember that part of having everything is having DOWN TIME too. Let her relax and take things in on her own.
Reply:Reading is totally fab!! Soft toys with rattles that she can make a noise with herself - soft books for her to hold herself with crinkly pages - any toys appropriate to her age really. The very best thing you can give her is your time!
Reply:Just feed the baby, they love food!
Reply:Reading is always a good activity. At three months singing, playing peekaboo stuff like that stimulates there mind. Also since you seem to like taking her outside the zoo is a wonderful place to take babies my son loved it from 2 months the animals move and make noise babies love it. I hope this helps. It is so nice to see moms that care there is so much meanness out there. WAY TO GO!!!

A place to visit that has lots of plants? Anywhere in Ohio or the bordering states?

Somwhere like a conservatory (been to franklin park in columbus) or a botanical garden. Somewhere really pretty and unique, it would be nice if there were some little shops or something around there.

A place to visit that has lots of plants? Anywhere in Ohio or the bordering states?
botanical gardens in Ft. Wayne Indiana.
Reply:Well it doesnt border but it is close. Go to Wisconsin (for real) in Milwaukee there are two places that are very amazingly beautiful. There are the Boerner Botanical Gardens and the Mitchell Park Domes. Then head north westish to Devil's Lake State Park. Huge bluffs and turquoise water. Astonishing.

What are the most prestigious horticulture schools in the US and Britain?

I'd like to work at an arboretum or royal botanical garden.

What are the most prestigious horticulture schools in the US and Britain?
I believe Ohio State University and Cornell University are among the best, if not the best, in the US.

Most schools with a horticulture program in the States are state-run universities, known usually as Land Grant Universities. Most all of them are good hort schools. But I believe Cornell is a hybrid university, part private and part state-run. The private part has made it one of the highly respected Ivy League colleges, so the name "Cornell University" has quite a cache.

One thing to think about: Decide where you want to work and chose a university that has a matching climate. For example, if you want to work at The Royal Gardens of Jamaica (assuming there is one), don't attend the University of Maine. Rightly or wrongly, potential employers will assume you know nothing about tropical plants.
Reply:Reading University is great one for the UK

This is a wide list in the USA

Schools colleges universities with Horticulture majors in USA

... of Schools, Colleges, Universities %26amp; Institutes offering Horticulture majors ... USA. Cosmetology/Beauty. Canada. USA. Graduate Schools. Canada. USA. Other ...www.a2zcolleges.com/Majors/Horticultu...
Reply:I agree with Emmaen and would add Michigan State University and Penn State. Again, these will focus mainly on plants for colder climes, but there will be access to information about plants in all parts of the world.

One of the best parts of learning at a land grand university, is the opportunity for hands-on training. MSU, for instance, has hundreds of acres at its disposal for teaching all aspects of horticulture, from propagation, to growing %26amp; harvesting, to landscape design, to landscape installation and maintenance.
Reply:This goes back to a larger, historical reality about intellectual expansion and education.

Basically, anything that is a specialization; or even considered a possible hobby (but still has a major in it) is predominantly in the Western world; mainly in these two countries.

It is a remarkable thing for humanity that we dedicate time and resources to all sorts of disciplines. It's definitely a bi-product of a developed society.

Other countries simply do not have the infrastructure to support a variety of interests. Most countries only provide tangible disciplines like engineering and medicine. It is so absurd to some Asian people that Americans go to school for Art, or dance and the other liberal arts. They don't understand what it's use is. We are lucky to be involved in progressive societies and an era where everything is easily available to be learned. It is an example of freedom. It's practical too. The creative world has patented and created huge business which these other countries do not have the capacity to do. This is why horticulture and other prestigious discipline all lie in the West; predominantly the US but Europe as well.

When you went to botanical gardens/NYC~which sections were ur favorite??

a friend of mine are going next week ... I want to definately see the rose garden, and just curious when any of you went, what were some of the gardens that were so awesome one wouldn't want to miss?!

thx ;-)

When you went to botanical gardens/NYC~which sections were ur favorite??
As a bronx native I will just assume you are going to the one in the bx. The rose garden is great and very close to the amazing conservatory (don't miss it). There a few different enviroments replicated in the conservatory, tropical and humid to dry and desert. There are water gardens in front of the conservatory not to be missed. A walk thru the hemlock forest is also nice and so is the snuff mill on the bx river. Then for lunch or diner go oveer to Arthur Ave for really good Italian food. I prefer Domincs which has communal tables , food is served family style and the waiter just sor of makes up the bill when you're read to leave.

Enjoy
Reply:You don't say which botanical garden: Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, or at Snug Harbor on Staten Island. I particularly like the last of those, for the ponds that attract ducks and other birds, the fountains, for the incredible variety of different types of roses, and for the very ultra civilized dining. The one in Queens is rather skimpy and sun-blasted. Brooklyn's is nice enough, but rather small also

Has anyone ever had their wedding at the Chicago Botanical Gardens? How was it?

I've not been to a wedding there, but I was at a retirement party held there. It was beautifully done, the food was fabulous, the setting gorgeous. We had considered it for our wedding, but it was a bit far away for many of our guests to get home from. If you can afford it, it would be a great place for your wedding.

How do you make lime cilantro rice?

I was a botanical garden event and stopped by a Qdobas for lunch, never been there before, and tried this lime cilantro rice. It was amazing! I've never tried rice like that before.

Anyone know what the closest tube station to Kew Botanical gardens is..and is it "wheelchair friendly"

I* am a member of the Royal Botanical Gardens Kew. Kew Gardens Station is wheelchair friendly except when you arrive from central London you will have to follow a slightly indirect route to cross to the other north side of the station to take the road to the entrance to the gardens, The station is served by London Overground's North London Line from Stratford, Highbury %26amp; Islington, West Hampstead. Willesden Junction etc, as well as the Underground District Line. Kew welcomes visitors in wheelchairs and also has wheelchairs it can lend visitors. www.kew.org

Where to stay for wedding at Bronx Botanical Gardens?

Attending a wedding in in the Bronx Botanical Gardens in July and don't know NYC too well.

A friend has offered to let us crash on her couch in Manhattan, but we would prefer to find a comfortable, reasonably priced hotel that would allow us to easily attend the wedding on Friday night and then be able to explore NYC for the rest of the weekend.

Where to stay for wedding at Bronx Botanical Gardens?
there is no reasonably priced hotel or motel anywhere around NY city.
Reply:Not sure what "comfortable" means to you, but if you found any hotel room in Manhattan on a summer weekend for less than $200/night, you'd be doing well. Probably best to save the lodging $ and spend it on a cab to / car service from the wedding, good food during your weekend, etc.
Reply:hell camp out in that huge big park
Reply:Look for a hotel in New Jersey (ft lee has a nice hilton, englewood has a crowne plaza) or lower westchester, both areas have good public transportation to the city.

What unusual animals could you see at the botanical gardens in sheffield in the 1860s?

Would you call bears unusual? There is/was a bear pit there. Other than that there have been tropical fish and special bird species etc kept in the hot houses but how long ago that began I'm not sure.

Lyra's bench at the botanical gardens?

In the Amber Spyglass it says that Lyra and Will sit on the exact same bench at the same time. what effect does it have on them do they visit each other? I wish they were together.

Lyra's bench at the botanical gardens?
I can't imagine how they feel as they sit there, year after year, knowing that that's as close as they will ever be to one another.

I'm sure that they get married and have children and I can't help but wonder if they tell their future spouses about the great love that they had to sacrifice.

I can't imagine being forced to walk away from a love so true.

Does the Botanical Gardens in New York City have a party/ball room where a girl could have their Sweet 16?

Yes there are locations in the garden where you can have a party. But it can be quite costly.

It costs anywhere from $10,000 to $50,000 in contributions plus a $5000 administrative fee. Plus you would probably need to cater from their caterer...Abagail Kirsch...she's expensive!

Does the Botanical Gardens in New York City have a party/ball room where a girl could have their Sweet 16?
I do beleve is you donate enough money to the Gardens you can use it for a party. It works that was with all the public gardens and museums. But the amount you have to donate my be very high.

There Is a department at the museum that you can call to find out more information. believe they are connect. If not the museum will give you the phone number you need. Don't know why, buy I do seem to have a memory of someone having a wedding there. This is not going to be cheap, have a second runner up idea.

I'm getting married in March in San Antonio. Which is better The Botanical Gardens or Marriage Island?

I'm getting married on a budget, but I still want it to be beautiful. We are from Houston, but it was a trip to San Antonio that made us realize we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. I can't seem to find many pictures of Marriage Island or Botanical Gardens, so I'm hoping for some advice on which is the nicer location.

I'm getting married in March in San Antonio. Which is better The Botanical Gardens or Marriage Island?
Marriage Island, if it's the place I'm thinking of, is *very* small, so if you're having many guests, it may not be the best option. Also, it's right on the Riverwalk, with the tour boats going by, so I'd think that having a ceremony there might be full of interruptions.

Here's a a picture of the island:

http://www.sanantonioriverwalk.com/Marri...
Reply:Botanical Gardens...no question. In March with all of the flowers starting to bloom, it will be free decor!!! You can focus on paying for lighting instead of a ton of flowers...
Reply:Marriage Island
Reply:Im in hopes that you have called about prices on both as both do have a price.

I personaly prefer the botanical gardens for a few reasons...

more room

upstairs room available for the reception

less noise (crowds, boats etc)

more areas to take photos of family, friends, etc (see source)

better natural lighting

BUT on the same token the Marriage Island is nice and there are some pretty areas there.

The last time I was there I got a nice photo of the bride and groom by a small waterfall. .... and I also was red faced (angry)when an idiot on the tour boat yelled out.. DONT DO IT as they were saying their vows.
Reply:The Botanical Gardens!! They should have someone to help you choose the perfect location, just be sure and book it ASP they tend to have a backlog.

Where In Bermuda Is The Botanical Gardens?

Where in Bermuda is the Bontanical Gardens????

Thanks

Where In Bermuda Is The Botanical Gardens?
The Botanical Gardens in Bermuda are located about a mile from Hamilton, accessable by taxi, scooter, or by the Number 1, 2 or 7 bus. The closest bus stop is at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital stop.

The Botanical Gardens are open 365 days a year, and are 362 of those days are free (the only exception is in April during the Agricultural Exhibition). The 36-acre gardens have a mix of collections, all quite beautiful. were acquired from the Tucker family.

A new exhibit is the cactus house, which came on board in 2003.

The Gardens are open sunrise to sunset.

I think that Mount Royal would be great, Also, there is a SMALL green house at the Westmount public Library,

This website link I gave has a link to a bird an flower sanctuary on Mount Royal.

Also consider the old port, and I think on Ile Ste Helene there are many picturesque locations, but you might be limited to how many guests these places can accommodate.

Also consider if you are from Montreal, a garden in a family members back yard?

As far as parks, NYC is known for it's parks..during the day you have a host of parks, Bryant Park, The Jamaican Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens which boosts 9,150 acres and 325 speices of birds to watch. You've got Ware Hill and many others. The only ones open in NYC at night are Washington Square Park and Central Park. Still I would not recommend that you "walk" through either alone. Good luck and enjoy your time in NYC!!!
Reply:The only parks I know of in Manhattan that are open late are Central Park and Washington Square Park. Washington Square is usually very busy all night because there are loads of clubs and restaurants in the immediate vicinity as well as NYU and not very scenic, but the people watching is great and you can often hear and see street performers there.

Central Park, although it's much safer now than it was in years past, still creeps me out at night. Though during the summer, they have a lot of free concerts there and it's well populated late at night.

Most other parks close at sundown.
Reply:Conservatory Garden in Central Park, 105th Street and Fifth Avenue.

not too many people come this far up, so it's always nice and quiet, full of locals...

Can someone tell me something about the Botanical Gardens in San Juan?

I heard that it is almost like the rain forest and that its not too far from the cruise ship area

Can someone tell me something about the Botanical Gardens in San Juan?
Yes to both, however it's in the middle of an Urban Area known as Rio Piedras, which isn't the safest area (but by no means is it crime-ridden) and not too many tourists go to.

Personally, I would opt for a quick rainforest tour- it's less than an hours drive from the docks to the rainforest and I feel it's a better alternative than the Botanical Gardens.
Reply:I have been there and I live in Santurce which is 15 minutes from San Juan Piers. Yes, the Garden is 20 to 30 minutes from the piers. But, from Old San Juan there is the Metro Express bus that goes to Sagrado Corazon Train station and the train has a stop near the gardens, but you will have to walk back from the station about 2 blocks. You can take a taxi, but I am not too much into taxis and their charge I can't say. To be truthful, the traffic from the piers when ships come in is a heavy and to leave San Juan is a bit slow. But if the ship gives you enough time, you can go but it will be like a rush thing and the gardens are too beautiful to go fast through. I have been to the gardens and it is like a forest. There are a variety of trees, ponds with turtles, a variety of birds, flowers and so much to see. If you want to see the gardens it is best for you to go when there is no rush.
Reply:LOL .

the whole place is like a "rain forest " JUNGLE .

the downtown san juan is like a sleazy, poor , dirty cheap

How much does it cost to have a wedding reception at the botanical gardens in the Bronx, NY?

to get married there you have to use the catering services of Abagail Kirsch. She is pretty expensive ~$200 a person.

It is a nice place but you will have to pay for it

I don't know, but I think it's a lovely idea. Call the Botanical Gardens (718) 817-8700, and ask someone there in authority, or check with your wedding planner. Good luck, and have fun.

Where can I find discounts for admission to the New York Botanical Gardens?

There are actually FREE days at the NYBG although I'm not sure when they are. Try NYBG.org

Admission to the NYBG is free on Wednesdays, around the year. The Bronx Zoo, located nearby also has free admission on Wednesdays. Report Abuse

Reply:Park on Bronx Blvd. near Waring Ave. Walk thru the park towards Bronx River Pkwy. There is an entrance on the other side of the walk bridge. It should still be there.

Can anyone tell me if there are any botanical gardens in Israel, and if so where exactly can I find the info?

Thanks.

Can anyone tell me if there are any botanical gardens in Israel, and if so where exactly can I find the info?
In the botanical garden Jersalem you can see some six thousand plant species.

The Jerusalem Botanical Gardens comprises more than six thousand plant species, which were brought to Israel from all over the world and are being preserved for the benefit and enjoyment of the public. The plants are displayed in six sections, each designed to create a miniature landscape of the region of origin of the plants. The Gardens also boasts a tropical greenhouse in the name of Florence Dvorsky, which contains a wide variety of plants from tropical regions. The University Botanical Gardens operates enrichment programs for school children - from kindergarten to secondary school - on numerous and diverse subjects dealing with nature and preservation of the environment.

Has anyone ever been to that Holiday train thing at the botanical gardens in New York? Is is good for a date?

How far is it by subway from Say... Midtown? How much would a taxi be about... I am treating this new guy I'm seeing to night out, but I don't want it to be cheesey or a hassle.... what do you think? Cool or uncool?

Has anyone ever been to that Holiday train thing at the botanical gardens in New York? Is is good for a date?
I'm thinking you are talking about the one in the Bronx since I used to take my cousins there every year. :)

It is a rather cute exhibit where you have a bunch of different trees and plants you go through first. Then you see the exhibit with many miniature trains that go around New York City figures (Statue Of Liberty, Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, etc.). If your new guy is into trains then he would like this. The park itself is a nice walk around too (they also have a cart that goes around most of the gardens).

Afterwards, not too far away is Arthur Avenue (Little Italy of the Bronx). You can eat a nice Italian dinner there. I recommend Emilia's. Nice casual atmosphere with good food.

Via subway from midtown (don't know exactly where you are coming from in terms of east or west side) but if you are close to the "2" or "5" train, take one of them uptown (if on the "5", get out at the E. 180th Street station and change for the "2".) On the "2" get out at the Pelham Parkway station. Change for the BX12 bus westbound (the sign should read out 207th Street). You'll pass the Bronx Zoo on one side, the NY Botanical Garden is opposite of it (north). Get out at the Southern Blvd. bus stop (there is a McDonalds across the street). Walk up along the Botanical Garden....you know you are right when you see a parking garage across the street). The entrance is not that far up.

To get to Emilia's, take that same bus westbound (BX12) on Fordham Road and get out at Arthur Avenue (once the underground part of the road comes up) or you could even walk it if you want to Arthur Avenue. It's about a three block walk down to the heart of Arthur Avenue (E. 187th Street)...no buses go along Arthur Avenue. Emilia is on the right side of the street walking down Arthur Avenue past 187th Street. Link below....
Reply:There are botanical gardens in Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. Queens is small and, in your words, rather cheesy. Brooklyn's okay. Bronx is largest and Staten Island is nicest (with dozens of different rose varietals, among other things), with an interesting restaurant on weekends. But I wouldn't go to any of them until April, unless you like wandering in greenhouses.

Taxis to any of these from midtown is going to be expensive, %26gt;$30. The Brooklyn one would be the shortest trip, get off at Prospect Park. For the one on Staten Island, take a bus to Snug Harbor from the ferry.

Transportation to Ethel M Chocolate Factory and Botanical Cactus Gardens?

I'm trying to save as much money as I can and I want to go to the Ethel M Chocolate Factory and Botanical Cactus Gardens in Las Vegas. Is there a bus I can take from the strip? I'm not interested in the tour buses that go all the way to the dam.

Thanks

Transportation to Ethel M Chocolate Factory and Botanical Cactus Gardens?
Vegas like many other cities has public transit. I have passed by the Ethel M/Botanical Gardens on one. I wasn't stopping there so I don't know where the nearest drop off for it is. Check with CAT

http://www.rtcsouthernnevada.com/cat/
Reply:There is no free shuttle service or anything of that nature. Perhaps you could hop on a shuttle to one of the nearby casinos and then take a cab?

The other option is public transportation. I do not know your starting location, but the address for Ethel M is:

2 Cactus Garden Drive

Henderson, NV 89104

Use the trip planner at the Southern Nevada Transit website to plan your trip.

Reply:There is what is called a trolly service which is really just buses made to look like trollies. They are green and white. They travel up and down th strip. You can pay per ride or by a day pass (for daylight hours) or a night pass. The cost for a pass is less than five bucks. It is pretty basic and slow but it is the cheapest.

Check the route map.

I'm a bit worried about you. That the OPW is a government body should be pretty obvious, even from the name.

Botanical garden in boston?

i visit one in virginia that was great .does anyone know about one in boston

Botanical garden in boston?
Sure, here you go:

Boston truly is the seat of America's history, and the Public Garden is no different as the country's oldest botanical gardens. Located just across Charles Street from the Boston Common, Boston Public Gardens features tranquil scenery, serene swan boats, and the much-beloved duck statues. The four-acre pond features foot-pedal Swan Boats, one of the Boston's most popular daily outdoor activities.

There's also an astounding statue of George Washington on horseback that was constructed in 1869 and faces the head of Commonwealth Avenue at the Arlington Street gate. Children will love clamoring on the statues dedicated to the popular book, "Make Way for the Ducklings," making Public Garden an ideal location for the entire family. Be sure to bring along a camera, as you'll enjoy great photo opportunities you can't find anywhere else.
Reply:well the Public Garden right in Boston is gorgeous and you should visit it but it's not a true botanical garden. Go to the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain (which is a part of Boston). It's affiliated with Harvard University. Also in Framingham (maybe half an hour west of Boston) is the Garden in the Woods. I know they have a website, I forgot what it is but you can google it. I've been - it's really nice.
Reply:If you happen to be west of Boston towards Worcester you could visit Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston. Good variety of vegetation and florals, not to mention a view of Wachusett Mountain and Reservoir.

Both are accessable by subway.
Reply:The closest you would get in the city would be the Boston Public Garden, or the Boston Common, but there are some nicer places if you're looking to travel outside the city just slightly. (For example in Watertown the Mount Auburn Cemetary, about 10 min drive out of the city)
Reply:botanical garden is in dhaka, bangladesh.
