How often should i water my small cactus?

I was at the botanical gardens in St. Louis and bought a little cactus, it's in a small plastic pot thats about one or two inches wide/tall, and the cactus itself is only about four inches tall.

How often should i water my small cactus?
Cactus in nature live in the dessert, so it gets its moisture from the air. Mist them once a week, this seems to work well for my cacuts. I find that watering into the soil is a little tricky, always seem to have to much water and the cactus dies shortly after. The misting method hasn't killed any cactus to date.
Reply:one always hears stories about cactus plants liking it dry thats why the desert has so many

now contrary to popular belief

the cactus is a plant like any other

it likes water just like the rest of all living things

it just prefers to be able to pull its water up from the base of its roots

so simply set the plant in a saucer of water once a week and it will be thrilled
Reply:Are you going to keep it indoors? Doesn't it need sunlight? But if you keep it outdoors, won't the winter weather kill it? And it will probably get too much water from St. Louis rain.

But I bet the amount of water doesn't really matter much. A cactus can survive a very long drought, but it can also survive heavy rains, which happen about once a year in a desert.

It probably needs to grow very deep roots. Think about that when you plant it, making sure it has room for them.

I don't think it's likely to do very well there, no matter what you do.
