It has a very good collection of tropical and sub tropical and medicinal plants. 150 different kinds of roses are grown here. The garden also has trees that are over a 100 years old.
The botanical garden is enriched with numerous native and exotic flora of wide ranging diversity, use and interest. This has been achieved by way of introduction; acclimatization and multiplication of plants obtained from various parts of the world since its inception in 1760. Today, nearly 673 genera and 1,854 species of plants are found in Lalbagh. The collection of the plants has made it a veritable treasure house of plants.
Some of the exotic species introduced from different parts of the world include Agathis sp., Amherstia nobilis, Araucaria sp., Averrhoa bilimbi, Bambusa sp., Bixa orellana, Brownea grandiceps, Castanospermum australe, Cola acuminata, Corypha umbraculifera, Couroupita guianensis, Cupressus sp., Eriobotrya japonica, Magnolia sp., Swietenia mahagoni etc. Indigeneous species such as Artocarpus heterophyllus, Bombax ceiba, Butea monosperma, Cassia fistula , Dillenia indica, Ficus sp., Lagerstromia speciosa, Michelia champaca, Mesua ferrea etc., can be seen. In addition, a number of ornamental and economic plant species both of exotic and indigenous origin can be found in Lalbagh.

Is it possible to visit two universities in one day: Stanford and Berkeley?
My dad is a speed devil, he thinks we can enjoy and look into both universities in one day, i'd like to visit the Botanical Gardens and **** though.
Berkeley tour- 10:00 A.M.
Stanford tour- 3:15 P.M.
can we pull it off and still enjoy the schools?
Is it possible to visit two universities in one day: Stanford and Berkeley?
Whew. Yes, you could look at them in that amount of time. Just a look.
It'll take over an hour to get to Stanford from Berkeley. Factor in traffic, parking and walk times.
I'd say that's a no on botanical gardens.
Reply:Without knowing how long your planned tours will last, it is difficult to give specific advice. University gardens and museums typically close at around 5 PM. So, you might not get to see much of Stanford if you're arriving late in the afternoon.
If you're driving, you'll have to leave Berkeley at 2 PM at the latest (and pray for good traffic on the 101).
Allow some extra time to find parking.
------
Public transportation will take even longer. You want to leave Berkeley no later than 1:15 PM. And by "leave," I mean you should be on the train at that time.
It'll take 57 minutes on BART to get from Berkeley to Millbrae. And then you'll transfer to Caltrain for an additional 30 minutes to Palo Alto (Stanford). Factoring in the time spent on transfers, it should take a little under two hours.

Reply:Tell the speed demon to take Hwy 280 to Stanford. 101 is a parking lot.
Reply:Probably, you could spend days at each though just to let you know, and they're only about 30 miles apart. (Personally, I prefer the Tree at Stanford.)
Reply:there will be traffic crossing the bridge so you, you probably won't make it.

Locations for a surprise picnic in Atlanta?
I am looking for a fun place to have a picnic dinner in Atlanta in February. I think it will be a bit cold to be outside so I'd like to find some place warmer! I've thought of my living room floor or the botanical gardens (closed at night though) but am hoping to get more ideas! Are they any other places you can think of? Please help! Thanks!
Locations for a surprise picnic in Atlanta?
I would say stone mountian is a good place but it is outside. ZOO ATL might be another good place
Reply:you could always go to piedmont park. check the weather before you go! :) have fun!
Reply:centennial olympic park... theres a covered picnic table area..and if it gets too chilly you can just walk inside CNN center, theres a nice food court area with cute little Atlanta souvenir shops. Or buy tickets to the coca cola factory or aquarium and roam around in there, very nice places.
Reply:How about one of the many golf course club houses that you might rent. Most of the private associations would be interested in renting the space especially in February.
Reply:callaway gardens might have something...but most of their stuff is outside i think

How long does a visit to the new york botantical gardens in the Bronx usually take, like how many hours?
Also, is it something really nice and worthwhile to spend the day doing?
New York Botanical Gardens...???
Depending on when you go, the Botanical Gardens is a good place to spend a few hours. And right next to it is the Bronx Zoo, so you can visit that also.
Reply:The good botanical gardens are in Brooklyn. Prospect Park. Its definately worth spending the day.
Reply:It will take all day
Reply:No, I was disappointed when I visited it.

Why does the smell of my navel keep me awake at night ?
my navel smells like a 10 day old opened can of tuna in a hot car. how can i keep this clean and smelling like botanical gardens ?
when i was at a 4th of july cookout i had attracted a swarm of nats and tons of fruit flies....is this normal ?
Why does the smell of my navel keep me awake at night ?
You should wash it.
Reply:I have no idea, but stick to something else besides comedy. You're about as funny as loose bowels in white pants
Reply:How do you know what a 10 day old opened can of tuna in a hot car smells like?
Reply:It's not the smell it's the fact that you are bent into a pretzel if your nose is in your belly button. Try laying down flat on your back.
Reply:swab it clean with cotton and a litle alchohol and wash it well. then sprinkle on some talc. itll b fine.
Reply:Aren't you amazed by how gullible these a**holes are?
They actually "believe" you.
Reply:It could have an infection in it. Give it a good thorough clean.
Have you had your belly/navel pierced? If so, yes it is infected.
Either way give it a good clean - very salty very warm water is perfect for cleaning and disinfecting. Do this a few times a day for up to a week. If it doesn't clear you could be very sick by this stage anyway - and go see a doctor.
Reply:Wash it good with SOAP - Dry it off
Cleanse it with Alcholol - Dry it off
If the smell gets to you. COVER IT UP WITH A BANDAID OR 2!
Reply:Um....washing it?
Reply:Eeewwwwww !!!!!!
You live in the south or something !
Reply:Uhh....use a cotton swab and some cool astringent after you bathe. Bathe daily.

How can i convince my parents to allow me to attend a book launch party?
- my parents aren't allowing me to go because they think I WILL GET LOST because it will be TOO CROWDED.
- it is the Harry Potter 7 book launch party at the VanDusen Botanical Garden, which is huge.
- i'm going to be in GRADE NINE by september.
- i'm going to be going with my one of my friends AND her mother.
- her mother will be driving us there, and accompaning us
- my parents trust her parents.
- it will be from 11 p.m. to 12:15 a.m.
- going to this book launch party IS MY BIRTHDAY PRESENT, and i don't think it's fair if i'm not allowed to receive my own gift.
How can i convince my parents to allow me to attend a book launch party?
Your parents should let you go ... you'll be with friend, and have a good chaperone, and since it's on your birthday, and you are getting the book as your 'gift' I think it would be a 'truly wonderful memory' ... and you may SHOW this to your parents if you want to.
Reply:so if your parents trust your friends mom, whats the problem.
Reply:Have her mother talk to your parents and ask permission to bring you.
Reply:Ask your mother to come along, too...then she will have no reason to worry
Reply:you need to show them you're a responsible young adult if you want them to stop treating you like a big baby. do your chores, get good grades, and maybe have your parents talk to you friend's mom so they feel more self assured.
Reply:If your parents trust her parents and her mom will be with you guys the whole time, then I don't see what the problem is. Talk to them and tell them they can call your friend's mom to talk to her about it and make sure you'll be safe. Also mention how much it would mean to you as a birthday present.
Reply:I know you don't want to hear this but your parents only worry about you because they love you. No it is not always fair, but I promise you in a month you will not even care about this anymore. The only thing you can do is possibly talk to your parents in a calm mature fashion and explain to them that you will be supervised. Maybe even ask them to join you, maybe that would make them feel better about it. If you are still not allowed to go just remember it can always be worse no matter how sucky it seems right now.

I need a list of things to do in New York?
from people who have actually visited NYC. Hints, places to go %26amp; see. Prices for nice dinners, broadway shows etc....I am planning a trip next April to see the Cherry Blossoms at the Botanical gardens.
I need a list of things to do in New York?
If you like Italian, you have to go to Sardi's (http://www.sardis.com) - I had the best salmon ever. They've got signed caricatures of celebrities on the walls, and you have a good chance of seeing a one, too. But the food is the reason to go for me. As I recall, we walked in after the theater crowd hit the shows, but you may want to call for a reservation.

(be sure to go up in the Empire State building...have a "look" around)

How close is Phoenix Municipal Stadium to Zoo?
I have several maps, but it is difficult to tell %26amp; the maps don't seem to be to scale. Is it walking distance? On one map it shows the Phoenix zoo, a park %26amp; botanical gardens all across the street from the Phoenix Municipal stadium...is this accurate? Thanks!
How close is Phoenix Municipal Stadium to Zoo?
yes, they are across the street from each other. Definately within walking distance. So the stadium is directly on the corner and the zoo is on the other side of the street, but is set back from the street, so it's a little deceiving when you look at a map.
Reply:1/2 mile at the most maybe less.
Reply:From Van Buren to Galvin Pkwy. (stadium to zoo) is only about 1/4 mile. Walking distance. They're just around the corner from one another.

21st Birthday party ideas - looking for something a little different?
I'm turning 21 in the middle of July this year. I want to do something a little different and already we've changed the venue 3 times. I was going to have something formal, at a restaurant but now we're going for an outdoors venue, about middle of the day.
We're thinking botanical gardens or a rainforest (I'm in Sydney, Australia). The problem is, I'm not sure what kind of games or whatever we can do at the party. Any one have any ideas or suggestions?
Also, since its outside, do you think it would be a good idea to have a theme or not?
21st Birthday party ideas - looking for something a little different?
Themes are good. If you were in NYC I'd say go have your party @ the 21 Club !!! But since you're down-under you'll have to improvise. Pull up the club on the net, might give you some ideas. Have you ever heard of the game: TWISTER -- it's lots of fun outdoors. Look up party organizers on the net. There are some good ones here in USA %26amp; you could e-mail them, tell them you're in Australia %26amp; in need of some ideas. I'm sure 1 or 2 would be glad to give you some ideas!!! Happy Birthday (my 21st was real bad as I was in bed for weeks with a uterine hemorrhage and almost died!) Best Wishes -- I wish I could come ! I've been to N.Z. twice, I so wanted to visit A. !!! But my friend never got around to taking me over there! P.S. -- I found the following on the net under: PARTY THEMES !!! Hope this helps! Barbie SW FLA !

Theme parties are fun! For many parties and special events, the fun, camaraderie--and most memorable moments--revolve around your theme party idea. An offbeat idea -- or the usual -- can create tons of fun ideas if you spend a little time preparing. These theme party ideas are tried and true. They are guaranteed to succeed. They are mistake-proof...I promise. Don't forget that little things mean a lot. So just don't just serve up chili peppers at your next "fiesta" and expect your guests to pull out a sombrero and start doing a Mexican hat dance. It's up to you to create the atmosphere...and if you need some help, Ask the Party Girl, and I'll be happy to help (even if I'm not invited!)...The Party Girl

Reply:Hi! I had my 21st this past September and decided to go with a house party. There was lots of alcohol, food, hubbly bubbly and music. It turned out to be a great party because it was a major social scene and lots of music, food, etc! We didn't even manage to get round to any drinking games let alone regular games, but everbody had a great time! Maybe you should consider something like that! Have fun :-)

What should my husband wear to an outdoor wedding this month?
The wedding is this month at a botanical garden late afternoon? We are invited to a wedding but should he wear a suit? should it be a dark suit with a white shirt and tie? We have never been to an outdoor wedding before. thanks.
What should my husband wear to an outdoor wedding this month?
A suit or a sport coat and khakis would be fine with a tie. He can lose the tie if it's not formal. I'd suggest lightweight, it can get pretty hot outside.
Reply:A late afternoon wedding would probably make it on the formal side, but the garden setting would make the occasion more casual than say a church or cathedral.
Since garden weddings evoke images of Spring time and pleasant weather, I think khakis and a dress shirt and tie would be just fine. The dark suit may be a bit "heavy" in look (and feel) for the occasion.
If there's a reception at a very formal place, such as a country club, he might want to wear a sports coat.
But I don't think formal dress is required for either of you. If I were attending such a wedding, I would wear a nice "church" type dress - not a long gown or a cocktail dress.
I'm sure the wedding will be lovely, and I hope you both enjoy the event.
Reply:If he feels more comfortable in a suit, that is fine - just make sure it is a light color. Dark suits absorb sun and heat and will be very uncomfortable if you are not sitting under a tent. A jacket isn't necessary either, but a tie should be worn. Beach weddings are one of the only occasions that do not require a tie.
Reply:A summerweight suit would be best - whatever colour he has.
Reply:u should ask all the men that r going %26amp; c wat color suit they r going 2 were. if they didn't decide, do a white suit. (black attracts more light making the person hot)
Reply:It might be hot, so I'd wear a nice clean pair of slacks, (not blue jeans), and a soft color shirt. Black leather shoes always look nice, whether for a wedding or a funeral, so go with some black leather shoes. Wear a blue or black tie, and if no one else is wearing a tie, you can always slip it off real quick.
I'd dress for the weather. I hope the weather is Ok for the wedding.
Reply:Board shorts and nipple rings.
Reply:The invitation should give you some pointers as to the formality of the event. If it's very traditional and engraved, he should wear a suit and tie as that indicates the wedding party will be formally attired. On the other hand, if the invitation is less formal, he'll be find if he wears a nice shirt and slacks, with or without a tie or sport jacket.
Most of the time, though, an outdoor wedding is slightly less formal than one held in a church or hotel. If he's clean and neatly groomed, that should really be enough. If he chooses to wear a suit to an outdoor even at this time of year, it can be a lighter color, but if he already has a dark suit it would certainly be fine.
If you're really unsure, feel free to contact someone in the bridal party or one of the families to find out how formal a shindig this is.
Reply:I would say to wear a suit with a solid color dress shirt and tie, it doesn't HAVE to be white, but certainly something along those lines.
Reply:I think you should have him in a lightweight suit (for his comfort). I would pick something with a color either a tan or if he only owns darker suits I would pick something that has a little color like a bottle green or at the very least a navy. Black suits are really for winter and he is going to be uncomfortable in one outside. I wouldn't do white...tis a little too Miami vice.
You can pair it with either a white shirt or a lightly colored shirt and have him choose a medium to light colored tie.
When he gets to the wedding if he see other men in khakis and polos he can leave the jacket and the tie in the car and will fit either way.
Reply:Light colored summer suit, gray or any other summer weight would be fine. Sounds very pretty.
Reply:Go with a standard dark suit. Maybe a colorful shirt and coordinating tie to lighten things up. (i like light green on guys) If it turns out he is very over dressed he can always take the jacket or the tie off. But most likely he'll be fine in this as the bridal party outside or not will probably be wearing tuxedos.
Reply:Tradition goes: when in mother nature, wear what mother nature gives us. To answer your question, honestly, A LEAF!
That will just about do it!

What things in Sydney are well worth seeing?
I am already going to the zoo, the beaches, botanical gardens. the opera house, the rocks, the quay, the aquaruim and the bridge.
I an not into extreme sports, heights, or mountain treks. I have already done some boating and cayaking this week and want to keep dry.
Also I am going to see other parts of Australia but have them fully planned out (except for the week in Cairns which I want to play by ear so to speak). So I want only things in or very near Sydney. I am staying in Kingscross area so anything great nearby will be great.
I am planning to visit a club one night but I would like to know the best ones. I also would like some good places to eat and some good bars. I have been told the Oxford Tavern is a lot of fun - which other places are fun to have a night out in.
Are there any good live music venues (folk, rock, jazz, blues and reggae are all good for my taste) and good places to shop (not expensive labels but nice goods at moderate prices)?
What things in Sydney are well worth seeing?
I am not sure if this is still going on , because I was there 7 months ago..so it's a long shot...but I saw Russell Crowe and his band The Ordinary Fear of God play in a small venue in Sydney, was about $20 so really good value, was a great night out!
Also food places, there is an all you can eat vegetarian restaurant - gavinias or something...after your feed you get a free movie in their very comfy cinema...loads of cusions to lounge around on.....
...go to Taronga Park zoo they do a dusk walk and BBQ..weather dependant.....
Hope you have fun...
when in Cairns, i recommend a visit to the Tjabuki (sp!) centre...AMAZING! and go to WildWorld not the Croc farm! :)
Reply:Sydney...
World Bar in Kings X is a good night, if your on hols and want some fun, Sidebar (under wake up hostel) is a laugh.
If you go across the Pyrmont bridge from darling harbour (on foot or monorail), the pyrmont bridge hotel is a good pub, walk further round to the casino which is huge and fun. Just by the casino is the Fish market - excellent in the moring, some GREAT cheap food!
Manly beach is probably the best beach in sydney, walk round the corner towards shelley beach and snorkel on the aquatic reserve, then have a barbie and box of goon on shelley!
Live music is frequent in most bars/pubs try the three wise monkeys on george st and scruffy murphy's just off george st. World bar (kings x) also has live music!
Deffo do fraser island and whitsundays in queensland! Gilligans is a good night in cairns!
"too easy, mate"
Reply:I'm not really up to date on what's hot in Sydney at the moment, but when you go to Cairns do try and take a seaplane trip if you can. It's just amazing to land on a deserted sand island and see nothing but ocean all around you. Here's a panorama fro a recent trip: http://www.360travelguide.com/idisp.asp?...
Reply:I thin opera house, darling harbour, there u can find so many discos and pubs.Opera house is also wothy one.
Reply:When I was in Sydney at Christmas we ate one night in the Bayswater Brasserie in Kings Cross - it was fantastic.
Why don't you head into the Blue mountains for the day? Or take the ferry to Manly - its lovely, and have a potter around North Sydney.
Or take a trip - about an hour and a half / 2 hours drive away is Jevis Bay - the beaches have the whitest sand in the world - it squeaks underfoot. Or maybe just head to Woollongong and have a look around.
There's loads of stuff to do!
Reply:There are lots of things to do in Sydney! Go to Darling Harbour the night life is great. It's worth seeing Harbout bridge at night, my husband and I were there in January and the bridge had heart in the middle with lit up! (The heart of city!) The opera house is amazing and deffinately worth the tour! If you can go to Blue Mountains and Koala park where you can pet koala's, wombats and kangaroos. Go with a firm called APT. Australian Pacific Touring. Really worth it spectalua views really breath taking! Enjoy yourself and don't forget to get a visa before you enter Australia and don't take any food with you on the plane because you are not allowed to take any type of food into Australia! Have Fun!

Why do scientists get paid so little?
I found these jobs advertised in the New Scientist and wondered why the pay was so little.
Royal Botanical garden Kew. Quality Assurance Officer. £21000 pa.
Medical Research Council. Quality manager. £25000 pa.
Cefas( dept of enviroment) Marine environment officer.£19000 pa.
City and Islington college. Lecturer in applied science. £25000 pa.
So what's your take on these kind of salaries?
Why do scientists get paid so little?
I guess it's because all they do is research but if they found a cure, than they would get paid ALOT!
They aren't treating anyone; yeah they may have the title of doctor but they are just researchers.
I wonder the same thing about teachers! Because, there wouldn't be any of todays professions, without having someone teach you on how to become a doctor, lawyer, nurse, etc...
Reply:25000 British Pounds converts to $48,666 USD. A lecturer at a 2 year college with just a master's degree would probably make about that where I live. I wonder what education this job requires. I have been to the UK and the cost of living is higher there than where I live in the US, so it would make sense that the jobs pay more.
The cost of living goes up, but salaries don't go up enough to make up the difference unfortunately.
Reply:The more the responsibility, the better the pay...
Reply:Because they are generally working off of grants and donations and the real money needs to go towards the equipment and support of the research.
Reply:Lack of funding, I'm doing a biology degree and doing an industrial year next year but am working full time all year unpaid because of the same problem. Good job I love it :-)
Reply:starting salary mate, it will go up. Also not everyone is worth megabucks
market forces get us all in the end
Reply:Are you any good at football?

Is this fictional garden realistic?
The two women spent the day at Mrs. Oliver’s house, canning blackberry jam and baking torts to freeze for later. Every hour, the bell on the Chapel by the Sea would strike and Mrs. Oliver would compare it against the clock on her mantle. Between the bustle in the kitchen, they found time to play cards out on the patio.
Mrs. Oliver had created a botanical garden in her backyard, modeling it after the house on Mt. Jötnar. She had an elaborate fountain in the center with little cherub statues atop. Almost everyone who saw it commented on the grandeur and how color coordinated her yard seemed. She had separated the warm colors, placing all the bright splashes of purple, plum and pale violet in one corner. The rich burgundy smoke tree was surrounded in royal irises with long healthy blooms. Russian sage and Spanish lavender lay peacefully around the edges with blue-green, silver, and chartreuse foliage. To the other side, the warmth intensified with fiery shades of dahlia, coleus, and sedum. The crimson blooms were surrounded in red fountain grass. High up in an old elm that shaded the yard she had several bird feeders and a curious squirrel who always seemed to appear when guests were near. Today, he’d dropped a walnut and was scurrying down to retrieve it.
While they played cards, they conversed with ease. They spoke of Ilsa’s new employers mostly.
“She’s a bit younger than he is,” Ilsa said. “But they seem very happy together.”
Is this fictional garden realistic?
It sounds lovely. Just one bit though...The garden of the "cool" plants was so in-depth with so many beautiful varities. I could picture them all in my minds eye. However, there are only dahlias, coleus, sedum and red fountain grass on the "warm" side?
There are so many warm colored plants. I was surprised not to read of a beautiful deep red rose bush, geraniums, red gerbera daisies, a beautiful hibiscus etc. Still it sounds like a very lovely garden. I prefer splashes of color here and there. Something a little less formal, where I could plop down barefoot with a glass of ice tea :)

Has anyone had (or know anyone who has had) a wedding in the Botanical Gardens in Fort Worth?
If so, was it a good place to have a wedding? Were they accommodating?? Please let me know any information about it, and don't give me the link to the gardens, I've already been there.
Thanks!
Has anyone had (or know anyone who has had) a wedding in the Botanical Gardens in Fort Worth?
My wife has coordinated a wedding in the Botanical Gardens in Fort Worth - more specifically in the Japanese garden there. She can answer any questions you may have. Go to www.ashleysevents.com to email her.
Reply:I don't know of anyone who has but what a terrific idea for a wedding. The smell and sight of all the flowers would be heaven.

Rectangular Garden Math Problem?
A landscape architect plans to enclose a 3900 square foot rectangular region in a botanical garden. She will use shrubs costing 21 dollars per foot along three sides and fencing costing 10 dollars per foot along the fourth side. The goal is to find the minimum total cost.
a. First express the cost c(x) in terms of x, the length of the side with fencing.
b. Next give the minimum value of the cost function c(x):
For a, i got C= 10x+21y^3 but i don't know how to put it in terms of x. I know that for b you just take the derivative and find the minimum but i'm having trouble getting part a.
Rectangular Garden Math Problem?
okay
x is the side with the fencing
it's a rectangle.
one of the other sides is also x
the area is 3900
so the other two sides are 3900/x
so, the real equation is
c(x) = 10x + 21(x + 2(3900/x))
taking the derivative d(function), we get:
c'(x) = d(10x) + d(21x) + d(42(3900/x))
c'(x) = 10 + 21 + (42*3900)x^-2
Set this to zero and solve for x.
Hope that helps.

Which city is the best place for me to live?
I am looking for good weather and lots of places to hike or walk and spend time outdoors. Maybe a place with lots of botanical gardens because I like nature. Also a place with a good population of friendly single people in their 30's so I can make some friends. I like ethnic and religious diversity because I like learning about other cultures too. Also it has to be in the US.

San Francisco

Reply:Good luck. The most racially diverse areas are also the most crime riddled areas. -Also the most racially diverse areas are the poorest areas with little green space or botanical gardens.

How often should i water my small cactus?
I was at the botanical gardens in St. Louis and bought a little cactus, it's in a small plastic pot thats about one or two inches wide/tall, and the cactus itself is only about four inches tall.
How often should i water my small cactus?
Cactus in nature live in the dessert, so it gets its moisture from the air. Mist them once a week, this seems to work well for my cacuts. I find that watering into the soil is a little tricky, always seem to have to much water and the cactus dies shortly after. The misting method hasn't killed any cactus to date.
Reply:one always hears stories about cactus plants liking it dry thats why the desert has so many
now contrary to popular belief
the cactus is a plant like any other
it likes water just like the rest of all living things
it just prefers to be able to pull its water up from the base of its roots
so simply set the plant in a saucer of water once a week and it will be thrilled
Reply:Are you going to keep it indoors? Doesn't it need sunlight? But if you keep it outdoors, won't the winter weather kill it? And it will probably get too much water from St. Louis rain.
But I bet the amount of water doesn't really matter much. A cactus can survive a very long drought, but it can also survive heavy rains, which happen about once a year in a desert.
It probably needs to grow very deep roots. Think about that when you plant it, making sure it has room for them.
I don't think it's likely to do very well there, no matter what you do.

Are there any beautiful gardens in Honolulu open to the public besides the Botanical Gardens (which are fab!)?
There's the Lyon Aboretum, with guided tours that are led by volunteers. It's really pretty, and I think it's free, too, but you need to schedule your tour ahead of time. If you google Hawaii/arboretum it comes up. Good Luck, and have a great time!!

Moanalua Gardens. Hitachi (Japan) just negotiated w/the owner to use this huge Monkey Pod tree as the Hitachi logo! Hitachi is paying the owner $400,000 a year for a contract of 10 years! How is that for insane?

Where should I take my friends when they come to visit with me in April?
I am a hippie and I like nature... but they are more the type that like the type that like nice restaurants, clubs, bars, etc... and I never know what to do for those kinds of things.
I know the touristy stuff like the botanical gardens, museums... but I need some good restaurants and more upscale classy touristy things.

WOW... if you are a hippie and love nature... you would absoulutly love Boulder, Colorado... biggest hippies ive ever seen there. Crocs (the sandal) was invented there and i live like 5 mins from boulder. You can also drive up to estes park from boulder in like 30 mins.

Reply:Take them to Coors Brewery in Golden. They can take the tour then sample the beer. Afterwards you can take them to a nice little restaurant up there for lunch or dinner.
Reply:Just take them to Lodo and walk around and find stuff to do. In Lodo you will find bars, clubs and restaurants to suit any taste. Plus, it's always very crowded so people who visit from out of town who like to go out will think it's the "cool/hip/trendy" place to be.
You are welcome to e-mail me if you want specific bar, restaurant or club suggestions.

My pomegranate has never flowered, what am I doing wrong?
I have a Pomegranate bush in my yard. It is 3 years old and has never flowered. I live in South Florida. I have seen very productive pomegranates in our local botanical gardens.
My pomegranate has never flowered, what am I doing wrong?
Usually when a plant does not flower it is because ithe soil lacks phosphorous or the phosphorous is locked up because the soil is too alkaline. Pomegranates are generally very hardy trees and as such should not need too much attention. They generally like poor soil conditins. My guess is that your soil is very alkaline and you should try dropping the PH with some soil sulphur or aluminum sulphate. When soils are too alkaline, a plant is unable to tap into the minerals that would ordinarily be available to it. I would also try feeding it with liquid seaweed. Seaweed does wonders for all plants.
Reply:Try giving it a high phosphorus fertilizer. Fertilizers with high middle numbers promote flowering.
Reply:Does it see much sun? Try giving it a high phosphorus fertilizer you can get this from a nursery. Fertilizers with high middle numbers promote better flowering. But before you feed the fertilizer to the plant make sure you read the instructions as to much of the stuff might kill it.

What are some good places to photograph in San Francisco?
I'm taking a week long trip over to San Fran in late March, and I was wondering if anyone who has been there or lives there has any suggestions? Alcatraz looks like it could be photogenic. What about the San Francisco Botanical Gardens? Has anyone been to them? I had planned to go to the SF zoo too; has anyone been there? If so, what did you think? Any favorite exhibits? Thanks.
What are some good places to photograph in San Francisco?
Alcatraz is unique and has great views of the city. I would take a cable car around; you can stop at the top of Lombard St. (the crookedest street), as well as Chinatown (very colorful) and the TransAmerica building (it's triangle-shaped). You can also go across the Golden Gate bridge to Muir Woods and Napa Valley. I'd also spend time on Fisherman's Wharf; the otters are a hoot! Have fun; I loved SF the one and only time I was there.

There are SOO many places to take good pictures. Don't forget coit tower and lombard street :-) I've not been to the zoo or gardens yet.
Will you have a car while you're here?
If so, try exploring down highway 1 -- there are a TON of beaches and little roadside parks and some truely amazing views.
Reply:If you go to Alcatraz...cell #181 was the one they kept Al Capone in. Be sure to get a picture of the masks on display that were made by the only prisoners to ever escape from the prison. The view of SanFrancisco from the exercise yard is spectacular. One wonders how many prisoners sat on those benches looking at the pure freedom just out of reach, across the bay.
The most photographed object in creation has to be the golden Gate Bridge. Sometimes at dusk you can get the white fog rolling across the bay and it completely obscures the bridge........
Reply:The Japanese Tea garden is a great place for photographs and in late March there should be a lot of flowers blooming. Also, if you like hiking, go take the ferry to Angel island. You'll be able to take great pictures from the ferry and if you hike to the top of Angel island there is a panaramic view of the city and surrounding areas. Sausalito is a beautiful mediterranean looking town nearby San Francisco. Coit Tower and the Ferry Building and farmer's market are good too. Have fun.

How do I find a London Art Gallery to display and sell my botanical paintings.?
I have sold many hundreds of my paintings, some commissioned, some have been bought by The Imperial College in South Kensington. Many have been bought by people from all over the world. I have shown at The National Trust, The Chelsea Physic Garden, West Hampsted and Gunnersbury Small Art Mansion and I show regularly in the Art Grenada Gallery in Grenada W.I.
How do I find a London Art Gallery to display and sell my botanical paintings.?
Make a google search for galleries london . Take some digital photographs of the best of your work available for sale. Include a list of where you have sold and exhibited before and bulk email to them (include prices). You could also upload digital photographs of all your works to a website or an artists community like Renderosity.com and then you would have a hyperlink to include in emails. If you are doing this why include only London try the US and other countries

Menu for a reception: What do you think? Can I make it better?
This is all a last minute plan because we have decided to go for an outdoor wedding at a local botanical garden. Afterwards we will have the reception at a friend's apartment complex (this is money saving, but it is a nice clubhouse with a deck and we will put some tables outside What do you think about this idea?)
Now as for the menu I have never been good at putting together the right flavors. So far I am planning to serve skewered sesame beef, skewered salmon, and maybe skewered chicken satay or shrimp cocktail as hors doerves. (These skewers have one large bite of meat not a whole skewer). Also mini croissants, fruit/cream platter, veggies/cheese/crackers platter. For the entree: bourbon pecan chicken or chicken marsala(no pasta) (are these too rich to serve?), green bean medley, and red roasted rosemary/garlic potatoes. This is for about 30-35 people is this too much food? What would be a better entree? Should I serve pasta instead of chicken as the entree like tortellini etc

Can I use your ideas once in a while???

You have put a lot of thought into this

Reply:Instead of Shrimp cocktail have Coconut shrimp (coat the shrimp with coconut %26amp; fry)
You can put the fruit on the same platter but off to the side (I don;t know about the cream (IT'S TOO HOT FOR ALL THAT) veggies/cheese/crackers platter
skewered sesame beef %26amp; skewered chicken (sounds good)
Serve a garden salad right before the entree (Do not give chooses of salad dressing (PICK ONE like Itlian) that's it
If you want to serve the mini croissants I would serve them with dinner
the entree: bourbon pecan chicken, green bean medley, and red roasted rosemary/garlic potatoes (sounds good) %26amp; maybe grilled salmon or some type of beef to go with green bean medley, and red roasted rosemary/garlic potatoes
I would stay away from sauces if possible.
CONGRTATS! Hope this helps!
Reply:you've made me hungry with your list, can i have an invite, sounds great.
Reply:Skip the chicken satay, as you're having chicken for the entree. I'd probably skip the salmon skewers too (since you have the shrimp cocktail). Serve the croissants with the meal. I think either chicken entree is fine. If you're trying to save money, just have wine and beer and a champagne punch at the bar, regular champagne for toasting after the meal. Don't go overboard with the veggies or the cheese; people never make a dent in it. You may even want to offer the fruit and cream as a light alternative to cake as a dessert instead of an hors d'oeuvre. If you have any vegetarian guests, you can serve them the pasta.
Reply:Personally I think it sounds very nice. You have a good variety ans you have to remember that people have different tastes. I just finished planning my Reception/Dinner and I know how difficult it can be. Aove all remember it is your day so have whatever you want sweetie. My very best wishes for a wonderful wedding and a life filled with happiness. Congrats
Reply:Sounds like you got the cooking skills to come up with about anything and leave people wanting more!! Try throwing some veggies on your skewers-like onions, carrots and peppers. Make a salad- whether it is pasta or a green salad. Everyone loves salad. Sounds like you will have enough food though. Good LUck!!

Can a broke unemployed horticulturist (myself) find a job and move to Hawaii without living there?
I would love to work at one of the many botanical gardens there. I understand there are also a few corporations doing corn and soybean research there as well. I would also like to work to help the endangered plants there. Any help is greatly appreciated.

A great employment search engine - simply hired.com
Reply:Living in Hawaii is very expensive. Most couples have both husband and wife working, and most people work two jobs to make ends meet. I strongly recommend that you first read the book, "So you want to live in Hawaii" which is available online at Amazon and other booksellers.

Have you or anyone you know ever gotten married at the Toledo Botanical Gardens in ohio?
Yes...It was a very beautiful wedding. I also know people who just get their wedding photos taken there.
Have you or anyone you know ever gotten married at the Toledo Botanical Gardens in ohio?
No, but I looked into the Cleveland Botanical Gardens. Pricey!!! It was out of our budget, so we are looking at parks instead. I just want an outdoor wedding with lots of flowers, and I know I can find it for less.

Where can i go to find good locations for photoshoots in my city?
LOoking for good locations other than the typical: piedmont park, botanical gardens, and atlantic station.
So if there's a site for searching for sites in your city or just places in Atlanta i'd like to know!
Where can i go to find good locations for photoshoots in my city?
Somewhere cool might be something like a more run-down or industrial area that isn't as "pretty" on the outside, especially if you're going to pose people in front of it, because it would be a nice juxtaposition. Maybe even somewhere like Cabbagetown that has a lot of tornado damage. Also, Little Five Points has a bunch of interesting buildings and people, and lots of cool things like graffiti on the walls everywhere.
Reply:U can shoot anywhere any street any rubish.
just when u're creative u can take incredibale shots even @ home.

Good Luck
Reply:I haven't been to Atlanta in twenty years, but there used to be a place called Atlanta underground with neon lights and some of the time exposures were unreal. A Bunch of weird people hung out on peach-tree street and that was good to shoot around.
Top of the Mart gave some outstanding shots in the air.

What is the rarest and or most endangered plant on the earth?
Subquestions:
1)Found in endemic or wild surrounding.
2)In botanical gardens or collections.
3)What is the rarest sample of any plant, alive or dead?
What is the rarest and or most endangered plant on the earth?
the world's rarest plant is arguably Encephalartos woodii, a cycad, of which only one specimen has ever been found growing wild in South Africa. it has disappeared and the species now only exists in botanical gardens

What's the botanical name of the fern that is used in rose bouquet?
It has deep green foliage and very pretty.
I'm trying to plant it in my garden for my cutting flowers.
What's the botanical name of the fern that is used in rose bouquet?
Are you talking about "Leather leaf" fern? This is the most commonly used fern in the floral industry. Botanical name is Rumohra adiantiformis. I have only seen it as a cut product for florists and not sure you can get it as a plant for the garden. There are many ferns out there that would work for arrangements though.

Botanical Garden to choose - NY or Brooklyn ?
which is more romantic?
Botanical Garden to choose - NY or Brooklyn ?
It is really hard to choose as both Gardens have really beautiful settings in general, as well as smaller more romantic spots.
If you like something with an Aisan theme - the Brooklyn Botanical Garden is definitely better with their Japanese Hill garden.
Also, if you go when the Cherry Blossoms are in full bloom it is really wonderful.
If you are going right now, the Kiku Chrysanthemum exhibit at the NY Garden is amazing and really beautiful.
The Haupt Conservatory is also a romantic spot, and since it is indoors you can find a pretty spot all year round.
I would go to the websites for both and look at the area that says "What's in Bloom" to see if there is a particular area or flower that really appeals to you and seems more romantic ie an English garden or a Japanese garden.

http://www.bbg.org/exp/bloom/october.htm...
Reply:why not go to both, if you have the time? they are great in their own ways.
having said that, i do prefer the BBG, which is more compact, next to the Brooklyn Museum, and easier to get to. they also publish their gardening guides that are second to none.
Reply:Brooklyn Botanical gardens is really nice, and not as crowded. I like it because its close, also I just think its a prettier park....then again, some botanist will probably tell you that the brooklyn botanical doesnt have a "weeping sand lady flower" or something, but I just think its nicer. Plus the resturants around the corner in park slope are as nice as manhattan places, just as trendy, but less expensive and less crowded.
Reply:Why not go to both, why do you have to choose one over another. I prefer the NY botanical Gardens in the Bronx
Reply:The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens are beautiful, especially in April or May (sorry... I'm not sure of the exact month, but I'm sure you can call them for info...), when the Cherry Blossoms are in full bloom. Then, it is absolutely stunning. In addition, the Gardens are also adjacent to the Brooklyn Museum, Prospect Park, and Grand Army Plaza.

I will be visiting the New York Botanical Garden this Tuesday. Am I supposed to buy tickets ahead of time or..
is it possible to buy them the same day when I arrive at the Garden?
I will be visiting the New York Botanical Garden this Tuesday. Am I supposed to buy tickets ahead of time or..
I haven't been in quite a few years, but I was certainly able to by my tickets upon arrival.
Here is the phone number from their website: (718)817-8700. They are open on Sundays, so someone should be able to confirm for you.
If you can, you should try and buy tickets before you get there, since many of their shows, events, and attractions may sell out by the time you arrive.
I live in the Bronx, and I consider NYBG to be one of our finest gems. Enjoy your visit!

Encinitas Ca. looking for Buddist fellowship Hall, and the botanical gardens?
I am looking for information on these places. I was in San Diego years ago, I think it was Encinitas that I visited these places. Do you know of other attractions and a resonably priced decent hotel?? thank you....
Encinitas Ca. looking for Buddist fellowship Hall, and the botanical gardens?
The places you're looking for in Encinitas are called the Self-Realization Fellowship Temple and the Hermitage and Meditation Gardens. The addresses are:
Temple
939 Second Street
Encinitas, California
92024-4411
Telephone: (760) 436-7220
Hermitage and
Meditation Gardens
215 "K" Street
Encinitas, California
92024-5040
Telephone: (760) 753-2888
To get you in the mood, the second link has some wonderful photos of the gardens.
"Paramahansa Yogananda established the Self-Realization Fellowship Ashram Center in Encinitas in 1937. Here, at the Hermitage where he lived for many years, he wrote his Autobiography of a Yogi, widely regarded today as a modern spiritual classic. The Ashram Center and nearby Temple are located on the Pacific Coast, 100 miles south of Los Angeles and 25 miles north of San Diego.
The Hermitage is generally open on Sundays, 2-5 p.m., except in inclement weather. The meditation gardens, which include a small waterfall and koi pond, are open to the public 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. on Sundays. "
As for other places nearby, there are several motels both on the old Highway and right of the I-5 freeway both up and down the coast. There are flower fields in Carlsbad and the Legoland theme park. The coast itself is wonderful between Encinitas and Carlsbad, my favorite being Moonlight state park and the unnamed beaches south of Carlsbad.
If you go into San Diego proper, there is Balboa park and the gardens, International cottages, and the zoo. But there are really too many places to list them all.

Virtual Herbarium Express
A Tool for Capturing and Sharing Herbarium Specimen Information Electronically
Virtual Herbarium Express is a software application designed for use in the field by New York Botanical Garden scientists. It is also available free of charge to anyone else who wishes to use it. Virtual Herbarium Express can serve as both a field and herbarium tool for small to mid-sized herbaria, or as a starter system for a larger institution that wishes to gain experience with an existing collection management software application before creating their own. It is designed in the popular Microsoft Access XP format and can run as a standalone application on a desktop or notebook computer.
Collection information is entered in a simple data-entry form and stored in relational tables. The form contains six screens accessible by tabs at the top of the form. These screens - Collection, Determination, Location, Features, Habitat, and Objects - organize the more than 75 fields into a format promoting efficient data-entry. Extensive authority files buttress the system. These files are used to check the accuracy of the names of plants and people and publications as they are entered. (For example, the program comes with a table of over 71,000 people records and another of nearly 12,000 publications.) A small subset of output formats are also provided, allowing users to generate specimen labels, checklists, and collecting trip itineraries. (View sample screenshots of the program.)
In the field, Virtual Herbarium Express becomes an electronic fieldbook, capable of recording all necessary collection information. Instead of writing the information in a notebook, later to be transcribed into a database, users can now create and maintain the database in the field. (A non-electronic, traditional version of a fieldbook from the 1920s can be seen to the right.) Digital photos, or any other electronic file, can also be attached to each record, providing data otherwise unavailable or unconnected to a database. This collection information can then be used to print labels and other reports.
The Virtual Herbarium Express application can be downloaded from the Garden's Virtual Herbarium website. Updates and new applications will be posted from time to time. Although current funding does not permit active customization support for Virtual Herbarium Express, users are welcome to modify the application to suit their own research needs, and are encouraged to contribute additional forms, reports, or alternative table structures to the online library.
Data Hosting
Electronic access to the NYBG herbarium collections has been available since 1996 through The Virtual Herbarium of The New York Botanical Garden. For institutions that use VH Express, but are not equipped to make their specimen data available in a searchable catalog, we will host that institution's data as a separate catalog in the NYBG Virtual Herbarium. The Virtual Herbarium Express software contains a utility that will format the user's data, at the click of one button, so that it will be ready to send to NY for hosting. For more details, contact us.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the hardware and software requirements for using Virtual Herbarium Express?
Virtual Herbarium Express requires Microsoft Access XP (2002). If you have this program loaded on your machine, then you will be able to run the program. No other hardware or software is needed.
What does the program look like?
For screenshots, click here.
Can I modify the program?
Users are free to modify the database as they wish. No restrictions have been placed on the program. However, keep in mind that any reports or forms posted here will in all likelihood work only on those version where the structures of the tables have not been altered. This is especially critical if one wishes to have data hosted at NY through Virtual Herbarium Express. Access forms and reports inside Virtual Herbarium Express can be changed as a user wishes with no consequences to data hosting capabilities. In fact, it is this capability that will allow users to make new forms and reports (e.g., specimen labels) that can then be shared with other users.
Can I use the authority files associated with Virtual Herbarium Express (data dictionaries of genera, people, publications, etc.) in other programs or databases?
You are encouraged to use these data to expedite your own research needs. Additionally, if there are dictionary datasets from the NY herbarium that you would like to have that are not currently in Virtual Herbarium Express, contact us and we will make them available.
How can I get a copy of Virtual Herbarium Express?
Virtual Herbarium Express can be downloaded from the Library, or contact us and we'll send a cd your way.

Botanical Gardens:
Although Valencia Botanical Gardens date back a very long time, they did not move to their current site (Huerto de Tramoyeres) until 1802. The University of Valencia gave a great deal of wherewithal to the new gardens which increased their links with other Spanish and foreign botanical gardens and achieved great renown.
Since 1802, they have had over 3,000 different plant species and a variety of plants from extremely different climates. There are still different early 19th-century style greenhouses.
How to get there:
Beato Gaspar Bono, 6.
Tel.: 391.16.65 · fax: 392.28.23

Jardines del Viejo Cauce del Turia (Gardens of the Old Course of the River Turia):
After the floods of 1957, the course of the river Turia was artificially diverted south of the city. The old river bed therefore dried up and was turned into a series of differently-designed gardens and a new focal point for the city at the same time. Gulliver's children's park and the gardens opposite the Palacio de la Música are of special interest.

Does Anyone Know What Is The Name Of This Squirrel?
http://sanfrancisco.about.com/od/photoga...
Got the picture off yahoo. But These squirrels are in the Botanical Garden In San Francisco Park %26gt;%26lt; Does anyone know what their names or species type they are? I know they are squirrels.. but what type?
Does Anyone Know What Is The Name Of This Squirrel?
Hard to really tell by the picture, but it sure looks like the common "red squirrel". They are smaller by far than the fox squirrel, and more of the size of the eastern gray squirrel.
The ring around the eyes are what gives me this identification. They are plentiful in the eastern United States, but I'm not sure of their range. Since they have a diet of most anything, I see no reason why they are not also common in the western states.
Reply:California ground squirrel. See: http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/im...
But most likely a Douglas squirrel-which is endemic to the Pacific coastal region according to wikepedia. http://www.nhptv.org/natureworks/douglas...

I was wondering where he went.

Deserving design episode new guest guest room?
Vern Yip purchased two paintings of blue flowers and a dragon fly, he said that they were by a local artist. They seemed to be painted on a piece of wood or on a canvas board. I was wondering where can I purchase those same paintings. In the episode Vern visited the atlanta botanical garden and a very modern store. Thanks

Are you sure Vern didnt paint these pics? If so then contact them for their sources on that episode.

At what age will baby be alert to experience the zoo?
My son is 3 months old and my husband and I want to bring him to the zoo. However when he goes outside,it tends to make him fall asleep. At what age should my baby be up,alert and noticing all the things to see at the zoo?Would you bring him now anyways just to get out into the nice weather? Our zoo has a nice new Botanical Garden as well as the animals.
At what age will baby be alert to experience the zoo?
at 3 months old, your son may enjoy the outdoors, he will probably enjoy more just being with you, as you watch a child grow, you will know when he notices things, that little finger will point to something magical to him, to you it may just be the neighbors cat, watch and learn, he will teach you... congratulations on the rest of your life.
Reply:You can take him whenever, but he's not going to remember. I'd wait on that until he's two or three years old so he can actually enjoy it and probably remember the experience.
Reply:i would say by 1 or 1 1/2...they become more interested in everything.
Reply:you can take him now but he will enjoy it more when he is six months and up
Reply:I doubt your baby will get much out of it - however if it's a nice day, just being out in the fresh air is good for everyone, and will be a nice relaxing day for you and your husband! I would think that by about 9-12 months they're alert enough to start seeing the world and wanting to explore it. Have fun!
Reply:i didn't take my son until he was 3yrs old. I wanted him to see and understand the animals before taking him, if you take them when they are too young they won't remember it when they are older. Most babies especially at 3 months have only short term memory and won't remember any details for very long.
Reply:We took my boy when he was 16 months, and he had a BLAST!! I think your son should at least be crawling before you take him. Any younger, and he wont even know whats going on. Its good that you are trying to get him outdoors, and have adventures!!
